A former Lil Pele who played in a mighty way for the “Sambas’ girls’ team, coached by Chenitta Singleton. They were winners in so many ways, on and off the pitch! If you google “teamwork”, The Sambas’ will appear. They displayed so much joy and fight in a wholesome way. Claire was an astonishing player who scored from any place, at any time, through any defense. When the referee blew those three whistles to officially end the game, after acknowledging their opponent, the girls hugged in a ‘team” victory, no egos, no chaos, only the true spirit of Harambee, Harambee, Harambee!
Claire attended and played soccer for Wando High School and the College of Charleston. She continued the prowess displayed throughout her time with Ebony City Soccer. As a result, Claire was inducted into the inaugural Wando High School Athletic Hall of Fame on August 28, 2026. At 6:50 p.m., prior to the football game at CCSD District 2 Stadium, Robert E. Hayes Field, Claire was recognized. The next day, August 29th, at the Wando Performing Arts Center, a more formal induction ceremony was held. Coach Vince Ashby and several alumni attended Claire’s induction into the Wando High School Hall of Fame.
When Claire shared the news and invited her Lil Peles’ coach, she stated, “My soccer journey started with the Peles, and I am so grateful that you all were a part of my athletic journey.”
Another wonderful story that exemplifies the important work and outstanding citizens who ran through the infamous Lil Peles’ tunnel, a program still in existence after 45 years!
